Child Rights

Universalisation of Elementary Education

One major focus of CARPED is the promotion of child rights. This includes the promotion of elementary education through day and evening centres by motivating parents and children of marginalized communities, especially girls, for enrollment into government schools and hostels. Around 3000 children in Kowdipally mandal have been enrolled into government schools through CARPED's efforts since 1998. Other activities are taken up to fight child labor as well as child marriages. Besides, CARPED has implemented various programs for nutrition and health care for mothers and children, such as immunization programs, birth registration, regular pre- and postnatal examinations etc in Kowdipally Mandal. Sanitation facilities and clean drinking water facilities have been improved in the villages with the assistance of government.

Safe environs for school children

CARPED has initiated a programme in Hyderabad, Warangal and Medak, to create a safe place to walk for school children. Sensitisation of children, parents and teaching community on road safety have been started in a cluster of schools. CARPED aims to intensify the campaign for safe environs around the schools for children with the participation of NGOs, CBOs and volunteers.

Training & Resource Centre

CARPED is engaged in designing participatory training tools and materials in the areas of forest protection, child rights, documentation and educational material on development issues. A team of professionals from social sciences, environment education and engineering are engaged in these activities. The team caters to the capacity development needs of the development practitioners of NGOs and CBOs in the districts. It is more specifically focused on participatory forestry and child rights.

Natural Resource Management

Community Management of Forest (JFM/ CFM / PFM)

CARPED implemented awareness programmes to promote community participation in the joint forest management (JFM) programme in Kowdipally Mandal. Self-help groups have been trained in micro planning methods, protection and value addition of minor forest produce.

CARPED also aims at the development of natural resource management practices with community participation for food and livelihood security of the poor. Promotion of livelihoods of rural poor based on natural resource management are in ten villages of the Mandal. Activities include tank restoration, repairs and related interventions through self-help groups and local people's contribution. Training to farmers, promotion of sustainable NRM methods, field visits and collective action of the SHGs are important components of CARPED's NRM and environmental programmes.

Village forest protection committees have been effective models for the community in the district in the area of participatory forest management and protection of the natural resources.

Cross cultural learning in development issues

CARPED and AIESEC - an international youth exchange programme - have been engaged in facilitating students from developed and developing countries in understanding and promotion of development issues. Youth are provided internship by CARPED to learn from field studies in a variety of development issues focused on child rights, elementary education, participatory natural resource development, tribal development, health etc. These youth engage in three months to a year and learn from fieldwork.

Besides, CARPED is part of the AIESEC's Learning Partners programme to sensitize AISEC's members on development issues and the role of NGOs and civil society. This consists of periodic lectures, dialogue, and field exposure programmes for student youth of Hyderabad.

CARPED facilitated cross cultural understanding and participatory research since 1999. Mr. Christoph from Switzerland supported by Intercooperation and a Swiss University and Ms. Christine a French social scientist have earlier studied scope and approaches of marginalized communities in the area of livelihoods based on forests and natural Resource Management.

Environment Education in Schools

CARPED provides environment education for school children in government schools as well as training programmes to teachers mainly through the development and supply of environmental educational (EE) material. So far, resource centres with a library of books and posters to disseminate information on environment and protection have been established in one cluster of schools in Kukatpally, and three clusters of schools in Kowdipally mandal (Medak). EE programme is implemented in twenty schools in Hyderabad and thirty schools in Medak. EE materials are published and widely circulated among the government schools in the state. CARPED has done pioneering efforts in developing EE material in Telugu and training of the teaching community in EE.
